A Home Connecting “Decorating” and “Living”
OMIYA renovation
PROJECT STORY
This project is a renovation of one unit within a two-family house located in Saitama City, Saitama Prefecture.
Before Renovation – Living & Dining Area
While preserving the spacious and open living–dining area with its gently sloped ceiling, we focused on updating the interior finishes, built-in furniture, and fittings, as well as the kitchen, bathroom, and lighting fixtures, without altering the existing layout.
The client requested a space where their collection of art and decorative objects could be beautifully displayed. We designed the renovation with the intention of creating an interior that highlights those items. To emphasize the framed artworks, we minimized the visual presence of elements that might compete with them—such as doors and window frames—so that the interior would act as a quiet backdrop for the art.
During Renovation – Existing Window Sill Protruding from the WallUnder Construction – Smoothing Wall Corners and Eliminating Protrusions
Custom-built elements such as bay window sills and kitchen walls were finished with mitred, flush corners to achieve a flat, frameless appearance. For the sunlit living room windows, we considered potential expansion and contraction due to temperature changes. The frames were made slightly proud of the wall for durability but finished with thin, white-painted boards that visually blend with the wall, minimizing the sense of framing.
Walls intended for hanging artworks were given a plywood backing so that hooks and fittings could be easily installed, and the painted surface allows for simple repair of any marks left behind.
After Renovation – Living & Dining with Built-in Storage (The wood ceiling and curtain boxes are existing; the wall storage and wainscot are newly added.)
The choice of materials and colors was kept simple to harmonize with the existing wooden ceiling. This allows the client’s artworks, furniture, and lighting to stand out more vividly. Other rooms follow the same design approach, with consistent wood tones and wainscoting details to create a unified atmosphere throughout the home.
After Renovation – Bedroom Headboard Aligned with Living Room WainscotAfter Renovation – Kitchen with Distinctive Green TilesAfter Renovation – Washbasin Using the Same Tiles as the KitchenAfter Renovation – Corridor with Matching-Tone Doors
The client requested a sliding sash window between the corridor and the living–dining area. We designed a custom-made wooden sash that allows flexible opening positions while maintaining a simple, refined appearance. The frame and muntins were crafted in wood, with hardware carefully concealed through trial and error. This element became a pleasant accent that visually connects the entrance area and the living space.
After Renovation – Sliding Sash Window Linking Corridor and Living–Dining Area
Based on the design and construction experience from this project, AIDAHO added a new “sliding sash” model to our long-running Interior Window Series.
After Renovation – View from Kitchen Toward Living–Dining Area
Through this renovation, we created a home that gently supports the client’s lifestyle—one that embraces daily living while celebrating the art and interiors that enrich it.
